Gathering ‘Connect Spot’ Stories
The Cultural Mapping Project engages residents within Courtenay, Port Alberni and Nanaimo in a video/mapping adventure. Participants are asked to tell a story on video about the place within the downtown core of their resident city in which they “feel most connected to their community”. Throughout March and April, 2016, the ‘Where is Here’ team went out for day-long excursions – taking video of residents showing and talking about their ‘connect-spots’ in Courtenay (March 5th), Nanaimo (April 2nd) and Port Alberni (April 9th).
Phase 1 Complete
We were honoured to spend time in each of these communities connecting with over 80 residents. We would like to extend a huge thank-you to to all who participated! A big thanks as well goes to our fabulous partners and hosts, who worked with us to make these events happen:
- Courtenay: The City of Courtenay, Courtenay Downtown Business Improvement Association & Comox Valley Art Gallery
- Nanaimo: The City of Nanaimo, Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association and Nanaimo Museum
- Port Alberni: The City of Port Alberni, Char’s Landing, Twin City Brewing
Where is Here: Small Cities, Deep Mapping and Sustainable Futures is a Mapping Project and Symposium that seizes on the tremendous interest shown in cultural mapping practices by small cities and brings to bear multiple knowledge-domains to move our collective understanding of this practice forward.
